Budwin Kamprath Secures Key Patent Victory for InterDigital Against Dolby
Budwin Kamprath Burgess Campbell PLLC recently won an important ruling for client InterDigital Inc. in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California in Dolby Laboratories Inc.’s ongoing patent infringement lawsuit against the Company.
Firm attorneys Richard Kamprath and Josh Budwin represent InterDigital in the high-stakes litigation, which carries major implications for the global streaming media sector. U.S. District Judge Wesley Hsu denied Dolby’s motion to dismiss the litigation over InterDigital’s U.S. Patent No. 9,185,268, which covers technology that improves the color correction process and video color quality on streaming platforms. After Dolby filed a declaratory judgment lawsuit, Mr. Kamprath and Mr. Budwin filed infringement counterclaims on InterDigital’s behalf. Dolby argued the ‘268 patent was invalid under U.S. Supreme Court precedent, claiming it merely covered a basic, unpatentable concept of converting video files.
Judge Hsu rejected Dolby’s argument, agreeing with InterDigital’s counsel that the patent covers a specific technological solution rather than an abstract idea. The court ruled that InterDigital’s method for displaying clearer, more accurate video colors is a genuine innovation in how computers process video.
This ruling is significant because the related infringement suit against Disney was paused after the entertainment giant agreed to be bound by the outcome of Dolby’s challenge to the ‘268 patent. By defeating the motion, our team preserved a foundational asset in InterDigital’s global streaming portfolio.
